Blackjack Shuffle Tracking as a Technique

Shuffle tracking is a spin-off or step-up of card counting. The prospective blackjack shuffle tracker must first be a master at card counting before he can try to learn the technique of shuffle tracking.

There is not a lot of information available on the "how to" of shuffle tracking, so the player should probably glean his knowledge from actual professional players who use this technique. The idea behind shuffle tracking is for the player to remember where the high cards are in the discard pile. Using this information, the player will then need to guess where the excess high value cards will end up after the next shuffle. Then he has to cut the deck so that those high cards will play to his profit.

This technique requires tremendous concentration and focus. It is difficult to learn and even harder to master. The famous, or infamous, MIT Blackjack Team included shuffle trackers as well as card counters.

The Advantages of Shuffle Tracking

There are two advantages to shuffle tracking in the game of blackjack:
    (1) It provides an edge for those who are good at it, and it can yield high results if used well.
    (2) It is more difficult to detect a shuffle tracker (considered illegal in some casinos) than a card counter, thus reducing the chances of that player being recognized or identified as an "advantage" player.

Shuffle tracking is becoming an outdated technique in most casinos since the blackjack "shoe" is rarely shuffled by hand these days. The shuffling is done automatically.

Online Shuffle Tracking

Trying to use the shuffle tracking technique in online blackjack is really useless, or even impossible. Online blackjack dealers are computers, and the computer software performs the shuffling with a random generator after each game round in fair and even ways.

Information on the Technique of Shuffle Tracking

It is not easy to find written information on this technique. There is some information on the internet. However, the explanations are vague and complicated. There is a book out by Arnold Snyder entitled "The Blackjack Shuffle Tracker's Cookbook". This book claims to be able to explain and teach the shuffle tracking method. But probably the best way to learn is from a real blackjack pro.
