Blackjack Variations

Online blackjack has become such a popular online casino game that the online casinos try developing new versions, or variations, every now and then. The purpose of the blackjack variations is to render greater interest and excitement to online gamblers.

A Few Popular Online Blackjack Variations

First, it is important to remember that Classic Blackjack is played with one standard 52-card deck. Most of the rules for the variations follow the Classic blackjack rules, but many of them are played with multi-decks.

Blackjack Switch

This variation allows players to do what would be considered cheating in the classic game: trading cards between two hands.
The game begins when a player makes two bets of equal amounts. Thus, the player receives two hands. The cards are dealt face up, after which the player might decide to "switch" the second card dealt to each hand.
For example: The player receives a 8,2 for the first hand and a 9,3 for the second. If he switches the two and the three, he will create two hands of 11 and 11.
Blackjack Switch is played with six decks of cards.
A player may "double down" on any two cards - this differs from the classic game.
Players may also "double" after a split.
The player loses his total wager against a dealer "blackjack".
The dealer's total of 22 will tie ("push") against any player total of 21. However a player's blackjack will still beat a dealer's 22.
Remember - an authentic "blackjack" is a hand with one ten point card and an Ace.

Pontoon

Pontoon is a British version of blackjack. It is played with eight decks of cards, and all the card values are the same as in classic blackjack.
As in classic blackjack, the player tries to get a total card value of 21, or closer to it than the dealer, without going over 21.
A "Pontoon" is a hand with an Ace and any 10 point card, even after splitting.
Pontoon gives a payout for a "Five-Card Trick". This is any five card hand that does not "bust" (exceed 21) regardless of point value.
It is important to check out the rules of Pontoon at any online casino, because they are not always the same from one site to another.

Caribbean 21

Caribbean 21 is another online blackjack variation. It is played with eight decks of cards and deviates from the classic blackjack in several ways.
An ace is only valued as one point. It can never be 11. All other card values are the same as in the conventional game.
Players receive two cards face up while the dealer receives only one card face up.
Players may "double" at any time and splitting is allowed on any two cards.
The dealer wins all ties.
If a player is dealt an ace and two 10-point cards, the hand is considered a "Caribbean 21" which ranks higher than all other 21 point hands.

Live Blackjack

This is not really a blackjack "variation". Rather it is a new development for online blackjack games. Using a video feed inside the casino's software, the player can play live blackjack with live dealers. The blackjack table is a multi-player table and one can "chat" with the other players and the dealer throughout the game.
The cards are "larger than life" so as to be easily seen over the video link. The game is slower than standard online blackjack, but it allows the online player to actually see the process of dealing which makes for an interesting change.

More and More

There are several more online blackjack variations with new ones constantly being developed. The online blackjack player should check out these new ones as the pop up.
