Blackjack Card Counting History
The strategy system of card counting in blackjack is generally attributed to the American mathematician Dr. Edward O. Thorp. In 1962 he published a book entitled "Beat the Dealer" where he outlined strategies for the best method of blackjack play. He is, therefore, considered the father of blackjack card counting.
Professional players consider Thorp's system as a simple one and, as computer technology advanced, more complicated systems of card counting became popular.
Blackjack Card Counting Theory
The idea behind blackjack card counting is based on the theory that a deck of cards with a high number of ten-valued cards and aces is good for the blackjack player, while a deck with a high number of low cards is good for the dealer.
To keep track, or keep count, of the proportion of high to low cards, the card counter will give a number to the cards, i.e. +1 for the low cards, and -1for the highs. He then does not have to actually memorize the cards played, but will just track the total score count.
Card Counting Players in Blackjack
Many blackjack experts will tell you that one must be a real "savant" (scholar) to be a card counter, but, in fact, you don't need savant qualities. You do, however, need to be a good mathematician. According to the recent film "21", based on the story of the MIT Blackjack Team who used card counting strategy to make hundreds of thousands of dollars in Las Vegas, the system of card counting is shown as requiring great intelligence and a high IQ.
In reality, blackjack card counting is not easy. In fact, I would say it is very hard and not always as profitable as the movies and TV make it out to be. To be successful, you need to be able to count a deck, or multiple decks, very fast while memorizing the total scores. At the same time, you have to act as though you are just a player like the rest of the participants.
Card counting in online blackjack is not the same as in land based casinos. Many online casinos have a feature called "autoplay" that helps the player card count and also helps with other basic strategies. This feature uses probability charts to minimize a player's losses.
Two things are important to remember when deciding to try card counting:
First, practice, practice and more practice. You need to make it look like you are simply playing blackjack.
Second, begin your game with a large bank roll. Statistically, you are liable to lose heavily before you start winning.
Blackjack Card Counting - Legal or Illegal?
Many land based casinos consider blackjack card counting as cheating and claim that it is illegal. They use all kinds of advanced tracking technologies to trace and follow card counters in order to expel them from their casinos.
However, the ruling in a 1994 trial for cheating by card counting and team play stated that the player was not cheating but making use of an intelligent strategy. Therefore, officially and formally, blackjack card counting is not illegal.
If you try playing blackjack and using the card counting strategy, you may find that you will end up a big winner. Good luck to you!
