Bill Kaplan

Bill Kaplan was a Harvard business school graduate. As a sideline, he had run a very successful blackjack team that worked the Nevada casinos. J.P. Massar who had heard of the exploits of Bill Kaplan and his blackjack team decided to approach him and ask that he help the MIT blackjack team shape up and start working right. While it could not have been foreseen at the time, this combination eventually made the MIT blackjack team the famous money making business that it was destined to become.

Bill Kaplan Trains the MIT Blackjack Team

Before interfering, Bill Kaplan accompanied the team on a foray to Atlantic City. During this foray he identified several weak points in the MIT blackjack team strategy. Following this initial assessment, Bill Kaplan agreed to train and finance the MIT blackjack team provided they ran the team like a real business. While several members of the MIT blackjack team were averse to such outside interference, the formidable reputation of Bill Kaplan and his successful track record won out. Thus, came about the creation of the first MIT blackjack team "bank". Bill Kaplan required that the MIT blackjack team members be accepted only following a grilling "trial by fire" where they were tested as to their capability in adhering to a single card counting strategy. Every player was required to file a detailed report as to how much he had played and in which casino. The report also included how much money he had invested in the game and how much he had won. In addition, the players were to be accompanied by chaperones whose job was to supervise the players and see that they were adhering to the card counting strategy and other playing rules.

The Founding of a Blackjack Hall of Fame

Although Bill Kaplan is not one of the Blackjack Hall of Fame members, it is thanks to the publicity attained by the MIT blackjack team backed by him that the Blackjack Hall of Fame was established in the first place. Many of the members of the original MIT blackjack team have already made it into the Blackjack Hall of Fame and it was Bill Kaplan's stern business like approach which paved their way. While this business like approach decreased somewhat from the glamour of the game it served to make the operation a money-making one and that has glamour in and of itself.
